BRIEF HISTORY OF
St. Peter's Church stands majestically on Mount Nebo, overlooking the Periyakulam Valley and Vaigai Dam, offering a breathtaking view. Its beautiful interior features a hammered roof beam ceiling and vivid stained glass paintings.
The church was built in 1887 by The Late Bishop Robert Caldwell (1814–1891), the Irish missionary who arrived in Chennai at the age of 24, travelled extensively across Tamil Nadu, and spent 43 years serving and educating the people of Idayangudi. His work, Comparative Grammar of the Dravidian Languages, earned him recognition from the Tamil Nadu Government with a statue at Marina Beach, Chennai..
In his later years, Bishop Caldwell built a house in Kodaikanal and often prayed on the nearby hill where St. Peter's Church was later constructed. He delivered the first sermon at its dedication. The church is attached to the CSI Diocese of Madurai and Ramnad.
It serves the English-speaking congregation, with Sunday worship at 9:30 a.m. and attracts people of all faiths for Friday prayers. The congregation is also involved in village ministry around Kumbur, Poondi, and St. Peter's, continuing its missionary vision.
